Reviews
'Sounds of History', Brighton Festival Fringe, Old Ship Hotel,
Saturday 13th May, 7.30 pm.
"Not your average gig this; singer-songwriter Martin
Jeremiah combines heartfelt song with talk to create musical snapshots
of lives lived across the seventeenth-century up into the present.
From revolutionary pirate queens, starving Irishmen and shell-shocked
soldiers, to poor students and lonely techno-obsessives, Martin
imagines the multiple different lives that make up Britain's social
history, but in keeping with folk tradition - song as story -
toil becomes timeless and the music acts as a form of reconciliation.
Songs of silent defiant struggles, oppression, sadness and
loss, they always retain something of the strength and warmth
of human spirit - like the Cornish miners chipping away underground
waiting for rays of sun, these are dark sounds, shot through with
light."
